Silicone is predominantly made out of silicon. Silicon is an element found in sand and rock – which is the most abundant element on Earth, after Oxygen.
It is an inert material – which means it is chemically stable and does not react with food or drink, under normal conditions. Normal conditions for silicone mean that it can resist temperatures between -80°C – 240°C. Incredible!
It is non-toxic and does not contain BPA, phthalates, lead or PVC, which can be found in some plastics.
It is non-porous – which means that germs will find it nearly impossible to harbour and this makes it bacteria resistant.
It’s easy to clean and can be put in the dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave or oven (up to 240°C remember).
Because it is so sturdy it can be re-used for many years but at the end of its life silicone can be recycled.
